Adore Delano: After Party

Something we learned from listening to drag albums is that too much can definitely be enough. Many drag queen tracks would of course do very well in a gay club and be the perfect soundtrack to a fun night out. But unfortunately, many of them don’t really carry that much artistic value (or vocal abilities, for that matter). But where most drag singers tend to limit their lyrics to fashion, makeup, glitter and glamour and should probably stick to lip syncing for their lives, others have decided to take a slightly different path and have proven that they’re more than just a cute face when it comes to performing. A good example of a drag performer who has taken it to the next level and who can really change ones opinion on drag albums or drag in general, is Rupaul’s Drag Race fan-favorite Adore Delano.

Before we were introduced to Adore Delano, we became aware of Danny Noriega when he was a contestant on season 7 of American Idol, where he made it to the semi-finals. A few years later, the singer decided to audition for a very different type of reality/talent show: Rupaul’s Drag Race. Here she became an instant favorite, even though she didn’t seem as ‘polished’ as her competition (“I’m polish remover!”). She made it to the top 3 of the show, where she eventually lost to Bianca Del Rio. But looking at her career now, we have to say: Adore may not have won Drag Race, but she sure did win at everything else! Shortly after season 6 ended, Adore went into the studio to record her very well received debut album ‘Till Death Do Us Party’, which solidified her as an artist and musician. Following the major success of her poppy debut, the very talented season six contestant now returns with her official sophomore record ‘After Party’, which was released on March 11 alongside a video for her latest single ‘Take Me There’.

The album starts off with opener I.C.U., which is slightly similar (structure- and progression wise) to I Adore U from her debut album. Right from the very first note it’s very easy to tell that Adore Delano has a strong set of pipes and that she’s an incredibly gifted artist. Her vocals sound steady, strong, controlled and professional. Her singing in the verses is combined with a very interesting rap-like chorus.

Next up: Dynamite! Both the song and the video are very sexy, sultry and fun. The super hot video for Dynamite takes place in a sweaty red-lighted nightclub, where Adore seduces both the camera and her handsome lover. But really, even without watching the video she’ll manage to grip your attention and will make you come back for more. The song is also noticeably radio-friendly and really surpasses the usual drag song. This makes it the perfect first single for After Party. We can already tell that this is gonna be an all-time fan favorite!

After Dynamite we get to the next song of After Party, which also happens to be the second single of the album: Take Me There. Adore recently told The Huffington Post "The concept for 'Take Me There' came from just wanting to have a fun anthem”, and that’s seems to be a very fitting description of the song. It makes you long for the summer, and we dare you to sit still while this song is playing! Take Me There makes you want to dance and have a good time.

The next song on the album is Better Than The Movies. Inspired by romantic movies, Better Than The Movies is a very cute pop song with a more relaxed beat. It has a very poppy feel to it. It’s not the absolute best song on the album, but it’s a good pop track that will stay in your head for days.

The fifth song on the album, Foreign Lover, is one of the most fun songs I’ve heard in a very long time, drag or not! It’s sexy, confident and very beat-heavy. “Hello, konichiwa, bonjour, hola, aloha, guten tag, namastê. You know, I saw you looking like you wanna fuck me on the table backstage” she sings as the track starts. Our Adore is all grown up!

Bold As Love is another poppy dance track that keeps the party going. The verses are calm start off as a delicate ballad. The lyrics seem very personal, and the verses mostly focus on Adore’s vocals music wise. The chorus on the other hand, is very beat-heavy and almost feels a bit out of place.

The title track of the album, After Party, is another sultry song with slightly more explicit lyrics. “We'll never sleep at my after party. It's my party and I'll fuck who I want” Adore sings, as she demands attention from the very lucky 'prey' she’s got her eye on that evening.

The poppy and summery track I Really Like It is one that Katy Perry would be jealous of! It’s the perfect soundtrack for a day at the beach or when you're out to have some fun with some of your closest friends. The song has some similarities to modern pop songs like Teenage Dream and California Gurls, but Adore somehow manages to give her songs just that little ‘extra’ thing they need. Is anyone else getting exciting for summer?

Out Of The Blue has a strong 80s-influenced beat and creates a very relaxed atmosphere. Fans from all over the world have been going crazy over a very specific note near the end of the song. We’re just gonna let you find out why!

Amidst all of these electronic and dancy beats is a song that would álmost feel out of place, if only it hadn’t been so good: I Can’t Love You. On this song, Adore shows a more honest and emotional side of herself when she tells you the story of a relationship that is deemed to go wrong due to a possible fear of commitment. The mid-tempo ballad is a very strong tune and might actually be the best song on the album. Not to mention her vocals on I Can’t Love You are to die for!

The next song on the album, called Save Your Breath, is a synth-pop track with a bit of a darker theme. The beat isn’t the most exciting one on After Party, but Adore’s amazing voice and the lyrics definitely make up for that

Constellations is one of the more up-beat songs on the album. The song beams with positive vibes and instantly puts the listener in a good mood, the message being very endearing and sweet. Just imagine hearing her fans cheerfully singing along to "A million stars light up the night, the constellations give me life, and heaven's boulevard, it’s shining”.

The album closes out with a slower ballad called 4AM, which describes the moment where ones heart breaks in the middle of the night. While Delano is usually portrayed as a very tough and independent individual, we all have our moments where we let our weaknesses get the best of us and, let’s face it, need a good cry. However, Adore Delano is a very strong human being who can turn any weakness into strength.

Till Death Do Us Party was the type of album you listen to at a party or at the club, After Party is what you put on where you’re in a cab back home, when you’re in bed at night, or the following morning. With that being said, the album definitely isn’t short off pounding beats and heavy synths. All in all, After Party has a slightly more mature vibe to it than Till Death Do Us Party. Adore Delano has proven herself to be a standout queen from the "RuPaul's Drag Race" franchise, and that she has the capabilities to make it big. She’s one of the few who have in in them to really break through to the pop-music mainstream, possible the first since Rupaul hit the scene with his 1993 smash single "Supermodel (You Better Work)”.
