RUPAUL'S DRAG RACE SEASON 8 RU-CAP
EPISODE 1: KEEPING IT 100!
Ladies, gentlemen, and everyone in between, Drag Race season is upon us. The 100th episode of RuPaul's Drag Race rang in the beginning of Season 8, gracing a new crop of queens upon our TV screens. The episode started with the tradition of workroom
entrances, and the model-esque Naomi Smalls was the first girl to enter. All legs and legs and body and legs, her entrance was a personal favorite of mine. Other entrances that stood out were Bob the Drag Queen's as she donned a hilariously clever leotard, Acid Betty's as she sported hair up to here and misted herself with a can of hairspray, and Kim Chi's as she entered in a flawlessly complete lavender look. Derrick Barry, best known for her work as a Britney Spears impersonator, was the last one to enter, making her the 100th queen to walk into the workroom. Acid, Thorgy, and Bob recognized each other as they all work in the New York scene, so it'll be interesting to see how their friendship pans out throughout the season. The mini-challenge this episode was a photo shoot with some familiar faces; all the past winners. Each queen had their shot at standing out amongst the winners circle, and Robbie Turner came out on top as the winner. As for the main challenge, as a celebration of 100 episodes, each queen was given a past design challenge to tackle and present on the main stage. Such design challenges included the Bitch Ball from season 5, the Money Ball from season 3, the Hello Kitty challenge from season 7, the Glitter Ball from season 6, and so on. As the winner, Robbie got the opportunity to assign each queen their design challenge, and she somehow forgot to pick a challenge for herself, getting left with the Bitch Ball. Some standout looks from the main challenge included Kim Chi's Givenchy-inspired hair couture look and Acid Betty's money dress, and it was Kim's hairy creation that won this week. Robbie Turner's poodle inspired look, Naysha Lopez's Drag on a Dime look, and Laila McQueens Post-Apocolyptic look unfortunately proved to be worthy of the bottom spots, ending in Naysha and Laila having to lipsync. After a fierce lipsync to Lady Gaga's Applause, Laila's sick hair flips and seriously sexy moves allowed her to stay, and we had to say adios to the beautiful Naysha Lopez. First impressions are everything, and the impression of this season I'm getting based on episode 1 is that these queens didn't come to play around. Ru picked an incredibly diverse group of seriously talented queens and I cannot wait to see what's to come.
