While a lot
of queens are known to move their lips to the sounds of the vocal chords of another to make a living, some
of them are themselves the owner of a fierce set of pipes. Courtney Act is a
prime example of a drag queen who can not only ‘lip sync for her life’, but
also sing as if her life depended on it! On February 29, the RuPaul’s Drag Race
favorite (real name Shane Jenek) released her new video for the title track of
her very well received Kaleidoscope EP. The song
was written
by Courtney and singer/songwriter Sam Sparro. It’s the fourth video from the Kaleidoscope EP and possibly the most exciting one
yet! Not only is the song an amazing pop tune, Kaleidoscope is also the official
theme song of the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras 2016, for which Act was
recently named the Global Ambassador. Way to go, Miss
Act!
Courtney Act, although not a fan of labels, could be
described as genderfluid and is also very fluid in her sexuality. So for this new
video, it doesn’t come as a big surprise that Courtney follows the storyline of
the classic “boy meets girl” storyline but with a slightly different take on
it. In the describtion of the video on her YouTube page,
Courtney wrote “I loved coming up with the concept for this video. I wanted to tell a story about a different facet of the Kaleidoscope. I feel that gender and sexuality are fluid and so often we get
stuck in the rigidity. Who knows when someone outside your usual target zone
might come also and sweep you off your feet?”
In the video for Kaleidoscope, the Australian
drag superstar explores
the proverbial ‘Kaleidoscope’ of sexuality and gender fluidity. She is seen
peacefully walking along the Bondi to Bronte coastline in
Sydney Australia, until she gets –quite
literally– swept of her feet by a beautiful skater girl. They spend a
wonderful day the beach together, after teaching Courtney how to skate (or
should we say, how to not fall of the board). We
see the pair sharing some vegan sorbet – and eventually even a kiss. At the end of the video, Act and her beautiful love interest walk off together whilst holding hands.
