ALASKA THUNDER-TALK

Describing herself as 'A well-travelled, campy extraterrestrial', Alaska Thunderfuck is a force to be reckoned with. Finding international fame as runner up on Season 5 of RuPaul's Drag Race, then going on to release debut album 'ANUS' - a commercial success - can she be stopped from ascending to true drag stardom?

Upon beginning correspondence with Thunderfuck (real name Justin Honard), it was immediately apparent why the self proclaimed 'trash queen' is so beloved world over. She is evidently serious about her career - boasting a devoted fanbase due to her constant international touring and true compassion towards the people who admire her. Her creativity is evident through her performance styles; her witty yet true to form impersonations of fellow queens such as Laganja Estranja, her music videos. I can't help but speculate as to what she will do next and I figure world domination is somewhere on the cards.

I got the chance to asssk Alaska a few quick questions on the #AAAgirls, The Haus of Haunt and the future of Glamtron's finest.

M: How has your style/character evolved from before drag race, to drag race then now; to after drag race?

A: Seeing yourself on television definitely gives you a different perspective on how things look.  Plus, having my picture taken as much as I do, I'm always changing things based on how I appear in an iPhone.  So I think as with any passion, I just keep trying new things and having fun with the art of makeup and hair and clothing.

M: Would you still class yourself as a member of the Haus of Haunt?

A: The Haus of Haunt was a specific time and a specific place.  It was very beautiful, and a time I will always cherish in my memory, but I don't think anyone really classes themselves as a member of it anymore.

M: What would you tell a younger Alaska - Alaska from 10 years ago?

A: Work hard.  Don't be afraid to work for free.

M: Recently you toured as part of the American Apparel Ad Girls - do you have any particularly good/bad memories you'd be willing to share from being on tour with Willam and Courtney?

A: I think it's all good.  Those two are very hard working, and very savvy business people.  So I think we've all learned from each other and we all balance each other out and bring something unique to the table.  It's a great trio, and we enjoy working together, and I think that's why it works.  As far as a specific story, we just shot a music video for our new holiday single "Christmas Sweater," and it features a barrel fire.  The fire kept getting out of control and we almost caught on fire several times.  Plus now all of our hair and clothes smell like mesquite firewood.

M: Your debut album 'ANUS' was released this summer - was an album something you've had a desire to make for a while? Will you release another album?

A: I was scared and apprehensive about it at first, but I had so many song ideas and hooks and lyrics and I really had an amazing time doing it.  I would love to do another one.

M: You are arguably one of the most popular queens on the international drag scene currently, regarded as a fan favourite - why do you think people are drawn to Alaska? Is it a reaction you ever expected?

A: I'm just grateful to be working.  It's nice to get to do what I do and travel and share it with people, and I'm glad people get it and they care.  It's important to me that we create a space where the lines of class and gender and race all become a little bit ambiguous and we all loosen up and have fun together, and drag is definitely something that does that.

M: Do you ever wish you'd followed through with acting, like you originally intended to do?

A: In many ways I have.  I use the skills I learned as an actor on a daily basis in the world of Alaska.  And I'm certainly open to playing other roles at some point in my life.

M: Do you have any tips for new performers who want your confidence?

A: Usually you can simulate confidence by faking it.  Have a good posture, act as though you are confident, and then you will be.

M: Lastly - how long do you see yourself doing drag in the future?

A: I'm not sure.  I do envision a future retirement with a house in the woods and chickens and a goat, but I also love drag so much that I hope it is always a part of my life in some way.
