Welcome back to Spotlight On- revealing the secrets of the best young talent that the makeup world has to offer.
James Charles is the epitome of creativity and sheer talent. At only 16 years old and starting out, his ability is far beyond that of many double his age. When planning for this series I knew it would be a must to talk to him and find out some of his makeup tips and tricks.
How did you first become interested in makeup?
I watched tutorials! I've been watching YouTube videos for years and years now so it was finally time to actually put makeup on a real person!
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I draw my inspiration from all around me. There are so many beautiful things in the world to be inspired by; people, places, animals etc. Sometimes I'll see a look and be inspired by it and want to copy it, but by the time I'm done it'll be something completely different. It's a super fun process to turn something into a look!
Favourite makeup brand?
My favourite brand is MorpheBrushes. They're amazing quality and their products are pretty cheap too. I've been purchasing from them since I started, and now the CEO follows me, so that's pretty cool.
If you could paint anyone, who would it be?
If I could paint anyone, it would definitely be Kim Kardashian. I love her so much and to do her face would be an unbelievable opportunity. I don't plan on taking over Mario's job anytime soon though!
If you could have anybody paint you, who would it be?
I would definitely have an iconic queen put me in full drag. Maybe Miss Fame or Mathu Anderson.
A product that everybody should have in their makeup bag is...?
A good, full coverage concealer.
I don't think I have a favourite look. Every look that I post instantly becomes my new favourite. It's a great practice to do your makeup and post photos to show your progress, so I think whichever look is my most recent will be my favourite look at this time.
Any makeup tips for beginners?
If you're a beginner and you want to do makeup, my one bit of advice is PRACTICE. Keep practicing. When you have free time, practice your liner. Practice your contouring. Practice eyeshadow blending. The more practice you have, the better you will get but most of all, do not give up!!
A huge thank you to the wonderful James for this interview.
To see more of his magnificent work, keep up with him on social media.
