SPOTLIGHT ON - Marlyn Ocampo

Welcome to the first addition of the 'Spotlight On' series! The aim of this project is to showcase the work of the best up-and-coming young makeup artists and find out some of their tips and tricks so that us mortals can hope to reach their level of magnificence.

If you are an avid twitter and drag fan like myself, I have no doubt you have come across the fantastic and sometimes mind boggling transformations of young makeup artist, @Marlyn_Marie. When planning this project she was one of the first artists who came to mind. I got the chance to talk to her and she is equally as lovely as she is talented.

R: How and when did you first become interested in makeup?

M: I first became interested in makeup when I grew up watching Michelle Phan's tutorials, but what really got me into makeup was when I met a famous beauty guru in my uni, and that was early 2014.

R: Where do you draw your inspiration from?

M: I draw my inspiration mostly from drag makeup and some of the talented makeup accounts on social media.

R: Favourite high end makeup brand?

M: I don't really own any high end makeup, except for one product because I still cant afford a lot of them, but I think that Anastasia Beverly Hills is the best high end makeup brand.

R: Favourite high street makeup brand?

M: I'm a drugstore junkie so I have a lot of favourites, but I have to say Maybelline, L'Oréal and San San and Jazzy Collections (both Filipino brands).

R: If you could paint anybody, who would it be?

M: I would love to paint any drag queen. It has always been a dream for me to paint a real queen instead of my face since I do it a lot.

R: If you could have anybody paint you, who would it be?

M: It's cliche but I really want Miss Fame to paint me because... who doesn't want to be #paintedbyFame?

R: A product everyone should have in their makeup bag is...?

M: Definitely a face compact powder.

R: Favourite look that you have done?

M: My favourite look that I have done is definitely my Trixya (Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova) look. Though it wasn't the best, I just have so many great memories with the look and both Trixie and Katya noticed me because of it and it blew up.

R: Any advice for makeup beginners?

M: Don't be afraid to try new things, and you don't have to spend a lot of money to create an iconic look.

A special thank you to Marlyn for being so wonderful. You can see more of her stunning work by following her on social media.
