MUSIC WE LOVE: HIATUS KAIYOTE

'Multi-Dimensional, Polyrhythmic Gangster Shit'

Neo-soul quartet, Hiatus Kaiyote, formed in Australia in 2011. Its members are Naomi 'Nai Palm' Saalfield, Paul Bender, Simon Mavin and Perrin Moss.

When explaining their unusual name choice, Nai Palm said ''Kaiyote' is not a word. It's a made up word, but it kind of sounds like peyote and coyote - it's a word that involved the listeners creativity as to how they percieve it. So it reminds you of things but it's not specific. When I looked it up online it was like a bird sppreciation society around the world, so that for me was a great omen, because I'm a bird lady. A hiatus is essentially a pause, it's a moment in time. So, to me, a hiatus is taking a pause in your life to take in your surroundings, have a full panoramic view of your experiences and absorbing, and "kaiyote" is expressing them."

I first became aware of the band through  their Grammy nomination for their song 'Nakamarra' as 'Best R&B Performance' in 2013.

Their most recent album, 'Choose Your Weapon', was released in 2015 and definitely did not disappoint. It stayed true to their unique sound and the reason why they have developed a following.
'Choose your Weapon' available on iTunes HERE.

It features 18 tracks, each with their own individual and quirky style the band is known for.
My favourites off the album would have to be;

"Shaolin Monk Motherfunk"

"Breathing Underwater"

"Fingerprints"
