Welcome back to Spotlight On! Showcasing the works of our favourite makeup artists from the wonderful world of social media!
I have been super excited about this interview with the amazingly talented and creative Katina, aka @doyouevenblend on Instagram. As soon as I found her page I fell in love with her intricate and colourful designs, her artistry is beyond incredible. I got the chance to speak to her and find out her makeup tips and tricks.
R- How did you first become interested in makeup?
K- I was never allowed to wear makeup until I was about 15. But, I was always really creative during high school and would spend my spare time doing still life drawings and collecting high fashion magazines/images of amazing photographs and make-up that I loved. I'd always aspired to be the creator of those types of images, so I initially studied photography. Then years later decided I was better cut out for the beauty and make-up industry.
R- Where do you draw your inspiration from?
K- From anywhere and everywhere!
Other artists, fashion and photography magazines, nature (colours and textures), shapes/geometric designs. Sometimes I'll think of a a cool theme and then I'll brainstorm from there.
R- Favourite high end makeup brand?
K- Ummm, tough question.
I can't live without my Illamasqua products! Hands down my favourite brand ever.
But, if were talking really high end, Estee Lauder and YSL are the go to.
R- Favourite high street/drugstore makeup brand?
K- NYX! Their products and range are so bloody amazing for the price.
R- If you could paint anyone, who would it be?
K- Lady Gaga! Because she's such a chameleon with her looks, she pushes the boundaries and my creativity wouldn't be restricted.
R- If you could have anybody paint you, who would it be?
K- Roshar and Pat McGrath, as a team. I so cheated with that question.
R- A product that everybody should have in their makeup bag is...?
K- Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear brow gel! I can't live without it. Everybody needs it. You could get caught in a hurricane, and your brow hairs literally wouldn't move.
R- Favourite look that you have done?
K- I don't think I could choose just one, but I'm most proud of my super precise/detailed creations and my crazy avant garde looks.
R- Any makeup tips for beginners?
K- Don't beat yourself up if you can't perfect a technique or a look, always keep practicing and researching!
Try to replicate looks that you love, it's the best way to learn. Also, invest in a set of decent brushes (particularity eye ones). They will change your life!
Huge thank you to Katina for this interview!
Keep up with her on Instagram!
