Hey!
It's all about the intrigue when it comes to music with me, isn't it? I suppose it has to be nowadays with the readily accessible streams of music and information on the artists at your fingertips that the enigmatic ones seem to stand out. I guess that's why I recently plucked up the courage to ask the ultra - cool Cory Myraas, AKA one man band Windmills a few questions on his music, "Windmills" and of course, his summer playlist.
(Try saying 'genre-bending experimental ambient-indie loop artist' in one go, I dare you.)
Q: First off: new single. 'Face to A Name'. Was that based off something that actually happened to you? Or is it just a story?
A: "Face To A Name" is a semi-autobiographical//sultry nod to a few different experiences that have happened to me. All my songs carry a bit of autobiographical nature to them (some more than others) and this one sits somewhere in the middle. I do like to pretend that I am as cool as James Dean when I have a drink or three... the rest, without giving it all away, really did happen.
Q: How did you come up with your name? (I like it, it's clever)

A: Sitting around a friends place trying to determine where outside of Amsterdam you would find those traditional windmills. A good friend of mine jokingly quipped "windmills in wisconsin". For whatever reason the imagery of windmills and motion stuck in my mind; it was right around the time I was trying to settle on a band name. Being a solo, loop artist, I'm constantly in motion while I play and constantly creating these noises and sounds (songs I guess you'd call them) and I feel that it translates well into the imagery of windmills. I'm glad you think it's clever!
A: There's a gorgeous venue in Kelowna called the Streaming Cafe - super intimate, very cozy, very raw.

There's a beautiful couples living room in Mission, BC I've played twice that I fell in love with.
A steamy underground bar in Vancouver called Guilt & Co. that has welcomed me into the wolves lair a few times and sent me packing with stories and love affairs a few times.
I've been extremely fortunate to play so many fun venues ranging from small (50 or less) to large (800), it's tough narrowing it down!
Q: Are you planning on touring any time in the near future? If so, is coming to England a possibility? (Had to be asked)
A: I am planning a big tour for the Spring of 2015. It's in the extremely early stages. If I were able to raise enough money I would tour England in a heartbeat - a European tour would be my ultimate dream come true. I could die happy once I've checked it off my list.
Q: What's your favourite song/s that you've written?

Q: How long have you been writing music?
A: I've been writing as Windmills for the last 3 years, but really it's been about 8 years now. It started with a broken heart and a crummy acoustic guitar when I was 18; coincidentally I think I'm in a perpetual state of broken-heartedness as I grow, it's hidden in all of my songs. Although it's probably blatant...Q: What's your favourite song/s that you've written?
A: "Face To A Name", "Fire", and "Her's Place". They're all so different thematically and they all really hit me deep in my core. FTAN is a sultry love song gone awry, Fire the saddest song I think I've ever written, and Her's Place is a tribute to my youth and my grandmother's cottage in Northern Ontario. That said, I do love all of my children equally... just those three much, much more.
A: I've been obsessed with FYFE for the past year (and he's from the UK!) If you ever see him live demand that he tours with me, then I'll get to the UK a lot quicker! I've been listening to some Hozier as well, Chet Faker, my brothers Van Damsel, and a whole lot of random other stuff (like Beyonce, Robyn, and Kendrick Lamar). My guilty pleasures are quite guilty.
Well I'd love to thank the absolutely brilliant Cory for answering and wishing me a Happy Birthday (a day after his, believe it or not)! Check his social media below - the stunning 'Face To A Name' EP available for purchase on Bandcamp now!
